Wearing my fetching red and white sweater, my cousin Zoë and I watch a Class 47 pass through the Avon Valley between Avoncliff and Bradford-on-Avon. Whilst Zoë is giving the train the traditional wave I have my notebook in my hand ready to write the number down; unfortunately, I do not have the number over forty years on! February 1976.

The referendum day was a significant one for me - no, not that one in 2016 but 5th June 1975. As a schoolboy, we were awarded the day off as our school was being used as a polling station. So, a group of us lads, with a day on our hands, decided to try out 'trainspotting'! We took ourselves off to Bath Spa station and duly set about collecting numbers. In our naivety, we collected headcodes rather than engine numbers until we were put straight by a more seasoned spotter we met. From that day, I was hooked and the rest, as they say, is history!

I began spotting in and around the area of West Wiltshire where I grew up. As time and resources allowed I ventured further afield exploring more exotic locations in the never-ending need to cop classes from other regions. I tried to photograph as much as I could but, again, the financial limitations meant that the equipment and material I used prevented top quality images being recorded. Thankfully, through the wizardry of modern technology and Photoshop, some of these images have had a second birth. I hope that you can navigate my website with relative ease and that you find some images that are of interest. If there are any errors (I suspect that a few will emerge!) or if you can update me with any new information please do not hesitate to get in contact with me.

All the images are my property. If you wish to use any or get copies of anything, please do get in contact with me and I will be happy to oblige

Yours in spotting
